HOW
TARPON DREAMS™
EVALUATES A DESTINATION
Tarpon Dreams™ does more than collect destinations from travel brochures and fishing websites.
Every destination is evaluated through firsthand fishing experience, local knowledge, travel practicality and the overall quality of the trip beyond the water.
We combine firsthand fishing experience, field research, local guide knowledge, trip planning, mapping, seasonal research and ongoing destination intelligence.
Some destinations in this guide have already been personally fished and documented.
Others are active research and expedition destinations that will continue to evolve as Tarpon Dreams™ visits the fishery, works with local partners and adds new Film & Field Notes.
Our goal is simple:
Give traveling tarpon anglers enough useful information to understand what makes each destination different before they commit the time and money required to make the trip.

THE "TD" 9 DESTINATIONS
Explore the nine Tarpon Dreams™ destinations we are fishing, researching and evaluating across Florida, Puerto Rico, Mexico, The Bahamas, Central America and the Caribbean. We have 1 to 3 "Vetted" Fishing Areas per Destination.
Our BIG 3 are Puerto Rico, Florida & Mexico
FIELD NOTES FROM THE FOUNDER
David Jamison | Founder of Tarpon Dreams™
I've spent decades fishing, traveling, mapping water and trying to understand why fish use one piece of a fishery differently from another. Tarpon Dreams™ grew out of that obsession. This destination guide combines the places I've personally fished with the fisheries we're actively researching, documenting and adding to the Atlantic and Caribbean Tarpon Trail.
WHAT MAKES A GREAT TARPON FISHING DESTINATION?
The Fishery
Resident fish, migrating fish, juvenile fisheries, oceanside fish, mangrove systems, lagoons, rivers and flats all create very different tarpon fishing trips.
The Fishing Style
Fly fishing, artificial lures, live bait, dead bait, sight fishing and conventional tackle each change which destination may be the best fit for each angler.
The Fishing Window
There is no universal “best month” for tarpon fishing. Weather, moons, migrations, bait, tides, water conditions and the location & type of fishery all matter.
The Complete Trip
A great fishery does not always create a great fishing vacation. Guides, lodging, accessibility, food, culture & activities away from the boat all add up for a great trip.

TARPON TRIP PLANNING QUESTIONS
Straight Answers Before the Deposit is Paid.
1. When Is the Best Time to Plan a Tarpon Fishing Trip?
The best time to plan a tarpon fishing trip depends on the destination, the size of tarpon you want to target and the type of fishing experience you prefer.
Some destinations offer resident tarpon throughout the year, while others are strongly influenced by seasonal migrations, rainfall, water temperature, tides, bait movement and changing weather patterns. Popular fishing windows can also affect guide availability, lodging prices and travel costs.
Start planning several months in advance when possible. Choose the destination and preferred fishing window first, then confirm an experienced local guide before booking flights and lodging. A trusted guide can help you understand seasonal conditions, realistic expectations and the best dates for the fishery.
No month guarantees perfect weather or willing tarpon. The goal is to select a productive seasonal window and build enough flexibility into the trip to handle changing conditions.
Suggested Resource: Fishing Calendar
2. Which Destination Is Best for a First Tarpon?
The best destination for a first tarpon combines reliable fishing opportunities, experienced guides and a comfortable overall travel experience.
Puerto Rico can be an excellent starting point because it offers convenient air travel, protected lagoons, year-round resident tarpon and fishing options close to San Juan. Florida also provides numerous tarpon fisheries, although the experience can vary significantly by region, season and the size of fish being targeted.
Anglers seeking a more complete fishing vacation may also consider destinations such as Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica or the Bahamas. These trips can combine tarpon fishing with additional species, lodging, beaches, food, culture and activities for non-fishing travelers.
The right first destination is not necessarily the one with the largest tarpon. It is the destination that matches your fishing experience, budget, travel preferences and definition of a successful trip.
Suggested Resource: Start with Puerto Rico
3. Should I Choose an Independent Guide or a Fishing Lodge?
Independent guides and fishing lodges can both provide excellent tarpon fishing experiences. The right choice depends on how much control, convenience and trip structure you want.
An independent guide usually provides greater flexibility when selecting lodging, restaurants, fishing dates and activities beyond the boat. This can work especially well for couples, families and travelers who want fishing to be one part of a broader destination experience.
A fishing lodge may combine accommodations, meals, guides, equipment and transportation into one coordinated package. Lodges can be ideal for anglers who want a fishing-focused schedule with fewer planning decisions.
Before booking either option, evaluate the guide’s local experience, communication, equipment, safety practices, cancellation terms and understanding of the specific fishery. Choose the provider that best matches your goals rather than selecting solely by price.
Suggested Resource: Guide & Lodge Partners
4. What Should a Non-Fishing Partner Expect From the Trip?
A non-fishing partner should expect more than sitting at a hotel while someone else spends every day on the water.
The best tarpon destinations also offer beaches, restaurants, local culture, wildlife, sightseeing, shopping, water activities and opportunities to relax. Some partners may enjoy joining a shorter fishing trip, boat excursion or sunset outing without committing to a full day of serious fishing.
Discuss expectations before choosing the destination. Decide how many days will be dedicated to fishing, which activities you will enjoy together and whether the lodging works equally well for both travelers.
A successful tarpon trip should balance fishing with the complete destination. When the trip is planned properly, the angler gets meaningful time on the water and the non-fishing partner gets a vacation worth taking.

Had work in Puerto Rico for 10 Days.
Had decided to take my Fiance with me. Since I was going to be doing a shoot for 3 days, I wanted to set some fun stuff up for him. I know he loves to fish, so I contact Dave from Tarpon Dreams.
I had met Dave years back doing some Marketing Stuff. He said he had the perfect set up for us and he pointed us to the right guide and the right lodging.
Sean had a great time fishing and the lodging / airbnb was perfect. Highly recommend TD!

Visited Laguna La Torrecilla Mid-May 2026.
Stayed 4 Days, Fished 3 Days.
Being from Florida, I have Fished for Tarpon quite a bit. The one thing that really hit me is HOW MANY Tarpon are in the Lagoon!
Caught fish the entire trip, but our Last Day was complete "CATCHING INSANITY"!
Put this Place on your "MUST GO" List!

I was referred to Tarpon Dreams by one of my Fishing Buddies.
I got set up to Fish with Capt. Carlos and the Place I booked was right on the Lagoon.
I took my Girlfriend because they said that it would be easy fishing. No Waves, No Wind.
It rained a bit, but that actually turned the fish on.
All I can say is WOW!
This was not a Fishing Trip, it was a Catching Trip.
The Puerto Rico Lagoon for Tarpon is Fire!
Thanks Tarpon Dreams
