Costa Rica can offer tarpon opportunities during multiple periods of the year, as there are both Resident & Migratory Fish. However, fishing conditions are strongly influenced by Caribbean weather, rainfall, river levels and ocean conditions.
Rather than thinking only in terms of a single “best month,” anglers should consider the specific lodge, fishing area and type of experience they want before choosing dates. The Lodges that we focus on are on the Atlantic Side / Caribbean Coast and have similar weather patterns.

YEAR-ROUND
Resident tarpon live in Costa Rica’s Caribbean rivers and lagoons throughout the year, so fishing is possible in every season. Conditions change, but the fishery never completely shuts down.
SPRING PEAK?
Mid-January through mid-May is one of the strongest windows, with generally more stable weather and productive ocean conditions. April and May are often considered prime months for large migratory tarpon.
FALL PEAK?
September and October bring another major opportunity as Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast enters a locally drier period. Hot weather and calmer seas can create excellent river-mouth and nearshore fishing.
WEATHER MATTERS?
Late November and December can bring stronger winds, rough seas and difficult river-mouth crossings. In Costa Rica, weather and ocean conditions can matter as much as the calendar when planning a tarpon trip.
