Puerto Rico Tarpon Fishing

Puerto Rico offers year-round opportunities for resident & juvenile tarpon, especially around the San Juan Area Lagoon Systems. Instead of a rigid month-by-month chart, focus on the conditions that matter most... Tides, Water Clarity, Bait and Weather.

Plan your Trip like a Pro!

The temperature in Puerto Rico fluctuates very little throughout the year, varies by only about 6°F (3.5°C) between the warmest and coolest months, and maintains a warm tropical climate year-round.
YEAR ROUND?

The Lagoons in the the San Jaun, Puerto Rico area are TRULY a Year Round Fishery. We have caught fish on every month we have fished, and travel clients report catches on every month on the calendar. Facts!

WARMER MONTHS?

Warming Water from the Atlantic and Seasonal Changes bring an Influx of Bait into the Lagoons. Also the modest warm up & internal clocks fire up the Feeding Machine. Making the Fish Very Active and Interested!

COOLER MONTHS?

Stable Weather and Good Water Clarity Create Prime Tarpon Fishing Opportunities in the Lagoons. And it makes for easy, and enjoyable fishing conditions.

The Temperature only fluctuates about 6 Degrees over the year.

CHANGES MATTER?

Tides, Wind, Pressure, Water Clarity, Salinity drive Fish Activity and Cooperation more than the calendar. The Juvenile Tarpon live in the Lagoon, much the same way a Bass lives in a Lake. They Gotta Eat! PERIOD.

San Juan Tarpon Fishing

Puerto Rico "Tarpon Trip" Planning Considerations:

Tarpon Activity

Tarpon are ACTIVE Year Round in the Lagoons. ALL YEAR.

Rain

August through October experience the most rain.

Wind

June through August experience the windiest conditions.

Temperature

Puerto Rico, on average has a 6 Degree change in temperature.

So lets Pull All of this Together and Make Sense of it.

The Fishing is Incredibly Consistent. How Consistent?

From our own fishing experience, conversations with anglers who have fished Puerto Rico, and discussions with numerous tarpon fishing guides on the island, one thing keeps coming through:

This is an incredibly consistent tarpon fishery.

Think about it this way. How often do you eat? Daily? Multiple times a day? How often do your pets eat?

Resident tarpon, and especially juvenile tarpon, live in these lagoon systems much the same way a bass lives in a lake or neighborhood pond. These fish are not simply passing through for a few weeks each year. They live here, they grow here, and they have to eat here.

And juvenile tarpon are growing fast. That means food matters.

At certain times of year, the competition can be intense. Fishing topwater lures, you can sometimes have multiple fish attacking the same area at once.

We experienced that firsthand in May 2026. One evening, we watched what seemed like hundreds of tarpon erupt into a major feeding event, ravaging tiny shrimp and glass minnows across the lagoon. It immediately reminded me of watching tarpon feed on Palolo worms in the Florida Keys.

That is the kind of experience that changes how you think about this fishery.

So when people ask us:

How Consistent is Puerto Rico Tarpon Fishing?

The answer is still:

tarpon fishing in San Juan, Puerto Rico is Incredibly consistent.

But the key is understanding why.

Puerto Rico tarpon fishing is often influenced more by day-to-day conditions than by one magical month on the calendar.

When the water is warm, bait activity can increase.

The tarpon eat.

When rain brings fresh water, movement and changing conditions into the lagoon system, fish and bait can reposition.

The tarpon eat.

When wind pushes bait toward mangrove edges, creek mouths and protected canals, it can actually concentrate feeding opportunities.

The tarpon eat.

When the water cools a little, fish behavior can change again, and in many cases the conditions simply become more comfortable for the angler.

The point is not that every weather change guarantees better fishing.

It is that the variables themselves can create opportunities.

The lagoon system gives experienced local guides different water, different edges, different channels and different protected areas to work with as conditions change.

That is a major reason the Loíza, Carolina and San Juan lagoon systems can provide genuine year-round tarpon fishing opportunities.

Different conditions. Different water. Different opportunities. The fish are still there.

About "PR"

Welcome to Tarpon Dreams PR, the "Untalked About" Jewel of Caribbean Tarpon Fishing, where ease of access meets a massive juvenile tarpon nursery.

Puerto Rico makes it easy to build a fishing trip that feels like a real vacation. You can fish the lagoons near San Juan in the morning, grab a great meal that afternoon, explore Old San Juan, hit the beach, or disappear into the rainforest the next day.

Welcome to the Lagoon!

Laguna Le Torrecilla

The Laguna Le Torrecilla ...

Much of the best-known tarpon fishing near San Juan happens in a connected system of lagoons, canals, mangrove edges and backwater habitat around Carolina and Loíza.

These waters hold resident and juvenile tarpon throughout the year, while changing tides, rainfall, bait movement and water conditions constantly reshape where the fish are most active.

For anglers, that variety is a major advantage. A guide is rarely fishing one single piece of water. The system provides multiple zones, protected areas, channels and edges that can be explored as conditions change.

Beyond the Fishing:

Relax on the Lagoon, close proximity to authentic Puerto Rican Cuisine and plethora of some of the best Kiosks on the Island.

All within Walking Distance.

But no worries, app up an Uber if that is your choice. Plenty of options waiting to drive you where you want to go.

Break up your San Juan Tarpon fishing with Eco-Tours on the Lagoon or Visit the El Yunque National Forest. A True Jungle Rain Forest Experience. Or rent a Jet Ski and do a bit of Self Exploration.

Welcome to Tarpon Dreams

Tarpon Dreams was built from time on the water, not from a marketing brochure...

I started this because I love fishing for tarpon, traveling to the places where they live, and figuring out what makes one trip worth repeating while another one is just okay.

And Bigger than just Tarpon Fishing, was Puerto Rico Lagoon Fishing! Simply Amazing Mio-Mass of Small Tarpon.

And the Year-Round Tarpon Fishing, made it irresistable.

What you’ll find here is based on firsthand fishing, conversations with guides and anglers, destination research, and the things we actually care about when planning a trip: the fishing, the place, the people, the food, the lodging and whether we would genuinely want to go back.

Why San Juan Tarpon Fishing Is Different

Honestly, the #1 Reason, is Sheer BioMass! It is a Scientific Fact!

Puerto Rico combines urban accessibility with a surprisingly wild fishery. Massive lagoon systems, tidal channels, bridge structures, and mangrove shorelines create ideal habitat for juvenile and adult tarpon throughout the year.

What makes Puerto Rico special is not necessarily giant 200+ pound fish. It is the consistency, variety, and sheer number of opportunities.

On the right day, anglers can experience:
  • Multiple hook-ups
  • Rolling fish everywhere
  • Violent surface explosions
  • Bridge and structure fishing
  • Artificial and live bait opportunities
  • Day and night fishing options
Puerto Rico offers a rare combination of:
Adventure + Comfort + Repeatability

The Lagoon System

The heart of the Puerto Rico tarpon fishery revolves around interconnected lagoon and estuary systems near San Juan.

Key Areas Include:

  • San José Lagoon
  • Laguna Torrecilla
  • Loíza River Systems
  • Carolina Channels
  • Isla Verde Backwaters
  • Mangrove Shorelines
  • Bridge Networks And Tidal Cuts

These waters create ideal habitat for:

  • Juvenile tarpon
  • Resident tarpon
  • Seasonal migratory fish
  • Baitfish concentrations
  • Ambush feeding zones
The result is a fishery that can produce action throughout much of the year.

Loíza – Authentic Puerto Rico

Located just east of San Juan, Loíza offers a more authentic and cultural side of Puerto Rico. This area blends:

  • Authentic Locale' Puerto Rican / Caribbean heritage
  • Local seafood
  • Mangrove-lined waterways
  • Lagoon access
  • Real "PR" food culture
  • Easy access to fishing launch points
Loíza is one of the true gateways into the lagoon tarpon world.

Isla Verde And Carolina

For anglers traveling with spouses, family, or groups, Isla Verde and Carolina provide an ideal home base.

Benefits include:

  • Beachfront hotels and AirBNBs
  • Minutes from the airport
  • Restaurants and nightlife
  • Easy transportation
  • Fast access to guides and launch points
  • Tourist-friendly atmosphere

Planning a Puerto Rico Tarpon Trip

Where should I stay?

Depends on the trip. San Juan, Condado and Ocean Park work well if you want restaurants, beaches and nightlife mixed with fishing. A fishing-first trip may benefit from staying closer to the lagoon and your guide’s launch point.

What should we do when we're not fishing?

Old San Juan, beaches, El Yunque, snorkeling, food, nightlife and island day trips give Puerto Rico tremendous non-fishing appeal.

Do I need a rental car?

Not always for a San Juan-centered trip. But once you start exploring outside the metro area, or eventually fishing multiple parts of the island, having a car becomes much more useful.

Is Puerto Rico good for couples and families?

Very much so. That may actually be one of Puerto Rico's biggest advantages over more remote tarpon destinations.

Scientific Studies

The notable scientists who conducted the major studies on juvenile tarpon in the San Juan area, specifically including the Torrecilla Lagoon, are Laura B. Horowitz, along with co-investigators from the University of Southern Mississippi and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER). [1, 2, 3]

The classic historical studies on juvenile tarpon growth and habitat ecology in Puerto Rican estuaries, those were prominently led by scientists A. Zerbi, C. Aliaume, and J.C. Joyeux. [1]

Torrecilla Lagoon tarpon biomass and catch-and-release telemetry studies.  And Florida-based tarpon tracking). [1, 2]

Primary Studies on San Juan & Torrecilla Lagoon Tarpon

  • Catch-and-Release & Telemetry Studies (2020–2023): Laura B. Horowitz (working alongside researchers from Mississippi State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the Puerto Rico DNER) conducted an extensive tracking study in the San Juan Lagoon network—specifically La Torrecilla and San José lagoons. They used acoustic telemetry to track juvenile and adult tarpon biomass, mapping post-release stress and mortality rates. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Estuarine Growth & Biomass Dynamics (Late 1990s–2001): Scientists A. Zerbi, C. Aliaume, and J.C. Joyeux published the baseline research regarding how juvenile tarpon colonize the mangrove backwaters and mudflats of Puerto Rico, tracking daily growth increments, peak recruitment periods, and habitat dependencies. Had work in Puerto Rico for 10 Days.

Had decided to take my Fiance with me. Since I was going to be doing a shoot for 3 days, I wanted to set some fun stuff up for him. I know he loves to fish, so I contact Dave from Tarpon Dreams.

I had met Dave years back doing some Marketing Stuff. He said he had the perfect set up for us and he pointed us to the right guide and the right lodging.

Sean had a great time fishing and the lodging / airbnb was perfect. Highly recommend TD!

Visited Laguna La Torrecilla Mid-May 2026.

Stayed 4 Days, Fished 3 Days.

Being from Florida, I have Fished for Tarpon quite a bit. The one thing that really hit me is HOW MANY Tarpon are in the Lagoon!

Caught fish the entire trip, but our Last Day was complete "CATCHING INSANITY"!

Put this Place on your "MUST GO" List!

Charlie

Charlie  S.

I was referred to Tarpon Dreams by one of my Fishing Buddies.

I got set up to Fish with Capt. Carlos and the Place I booked was right on the Lagoon.

I took my Girlfriend because they said that it would be easy fishing. No Waves, No Wind.

It rained a bit, but that actually turned the fish on.

All I can say is WOW!

This was not a Fishing Trip, it was a Catching Trip.

The Puerto Rico Lagoon for Tarpon is Fire!
