Sight Fishing for Tarpon:

Read the Fish before you Cast.

See More. Read More. Cast Better.

The Cast Starts Long Before the Fly or Lure Hits the Water

Sight fishing for tarpon is not simply about spotting a fish and throwing something in front of it. The real advantage begins before the cast, when you recognize how the fish is moving, where it is headed, how fast it is traveling, and whether its body language suggests that it is feeding, cruising, resting, or already aware of you.

A tarpon approaching steadily along an edge presents a completely different opportunity than a laid-up fish suspended almost motionless in clear water. Rolling fish create another problem entirely. Distance, angle, light, current, wind, boat position and the fish’s direction of travel all influence where the presentation needs to land and how much time you actually have to make it.

The best sight-casting opportunities often come from slowing the entire process down mentally. Read the fish first. Understand the movement. Anticipate where it will be rather than casting where it is. When the cast finally happens, it should feel like the last step in a decision that started several seconds earlier.
