Laguna La Torrecilla:

"The Fishery"

Where mangroves, brackish water and protected lagoon habitat create one of northeast Puerto Rico’s most interesting juvenile tarpon environments.

Laguna La Torrecilla sits just east of San Juan in the Loíza area, forming part of an interconnected coastal lagoon and mangrove system that gives anglers access to a very different kind of Puerto Rico tarpon fishing. Rather than focusing on open-ocean migratory fish, much of the appeal here is the opportunity to target juvenile and resident tarpon in protected water where channels, mangrove shorelines, deeper pockets and changing water conditions concentrate both bait and fish.

What makes Torrecilla especially interesting is the relationship between the fishery and the environment around it. Freshwater influence, tidal exchange, salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and clarity can all change how different parts of the system fish from one day to the next. Those variables are not just background conditions. They help shape where juvenile tarpon can live, feed, move and find refuge within the lagoon.

That combination of accessible water, diverse habitat and measurable environmental change makes Laguna La Torrecilla valuable for more than simply catching tarpon. It is the kind of fishery where firsthand observations can be compared with scientific research and long-term environmental data, helping build a clearer picture of why juvenile tarpon use certain areas, how conditions influence their behavior, and what anglers can learn from the system over time.
