Here is the answer nobody selling fishing trips should be afraid to say:

The best time to go fishing is when you have time to go fishing.

That does not mean timing is irrelevant.

Far from it.

Tarpon migrations matter. Water temperature matters. Tides matter. Bait matters. Weather matters. Moon phases can matter. And I personally pay attention to solunar tables because I have spent enough time on the water to believe there is something there worth watching.

But fishing has a nasty habit of ignoring our charts.

Some of the best days of your life can happen during a supposedly mediocre fishing window.

Some of the worst can happen during the period everybody told you was perfect.

The fish still have to eat.

So the goal is not to find one magical date.

The goal is to understand the fishery well enough to improve your odds without letting a calendar talk you out of going fishing.

There Is No Single Tarpon Season

If somebody tells you tarpon season is simply May and June, they are probably describing one particular fishery.

Tampa Bay? Boca Grande? 100% YES! Other Destinations? Maybe. Maybe Not.

Tarpon occupy an enormous geographic range and use very different habitats throughout their lives.

Migratory adults do not follow the same calendar as resident fish.

Resident adults do not necessarily behave like juvenile tarpon living in protected nursery systems.

And Florida's famous seasonal migration should not become the calendar for Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica or every other tarpon destination.

The correct question is not simply:

What month is best?

It is:

What is happening in this fishery during the dates I can travel?

That question is much more useful.

Migratory Tarpon Create Famous Seasonal Peaks

Some of the world's most famous tarpon fisheries revolve around large adult fish moving along coastlines, through passes and toward spawning areas.

Florida is the obvious example.

When large migratory fish concentrate in predictable areas, the fishing can become extraordinary.

But peak migration also brings other realities:

• higher guide demand
• reduced availability
• more boats
• higher lodging demand
• changing weather
• increased travel costs
• more competition around famous fisheries

A peak fishing window can absolutely be worth chasing.

It just is not the only way to catch a tarpon.

Resident Tarpon Change the Calendar

Not every tarpon packs its bags when the famous migration ends.

Resident fish can remain around bays, bridges, rivers, mangrove systems and lagoons for long periods of time.

• Their behavior changes.
• Temperature changes.
• Bait changes.
• Water changes.
• Their location may change.

But their presence can create legitimate fishing opportunities outside the months that dominate magazine articles and social media.

That distinction matters when planning a trip.

A destination with strong resident fish may give you much more scheduling flexibility than a fishery built primarily around a narrow migration window.

Juvenile Tarpon Can Rewrite the Rules Completely

Juvenile tarpon are another world.

Protected mangrove creeks, lagoons, canals, backwaters and nursery systems can hold smaller tarpon through long portions of the year, especially in tropical climates.

Puerto Rico is a good example.

Using Florida's migration calendar to decide whether juvenile tarpon fishing around San Juan is worthwhile would miss the point entirely.

Those fisheries respond to their own combination of:

• water movement
• rainfall
• bait
• oxygen
• salinity
• temperature
• habitat
• tides
• local weather

And this is one area where Tarpon Dreams intends to go much deeper.

Some of it will go considerably deeper.

That is intentional.

The fishing world is a moving parade. New anglers enter it every day, and everybody begins at Step One.

Experienced anglers can skip what they already know.

The platinum nuggets will still be there.

Tides Matter Every Day

Unlike moon phases, tides give us opportunities to make adjustments every single day.

Current moves bait.

Falling water can pull forage from mangroves and flats.

Incoming water can open feeding areas.

Passes can come alive when current reaches the right speed.

Bridges, shorelines, river mouths and lagoon connections can all change dramatically as water moves.

But there is no universal “best tarpon tide.”

That would be too easy.

A tide stage that is excellent in one fishery may be mediocre somewhere else.

Local knowledge wins.

I pay attention to tides because they tell me when water is going to move and when the environment may change.

Then I watch what actually happens.

The fish get the final vote.

Full Moon vs. New Moon

Anglers have argued about moon phases forever.

That discussion is not ending here.

Personally, if I have the luxury of choosing dates and the guide has availability, I tend to favor the new moon.

That is a preference.

It is not a Tarpon Dreams commandment.

Full moons can produce excellent fishing.

Quarter moons can produce excellent fishing.

Random Tuesdays that look completely ordinary on paper can produce fish you remember for the rest of your life.

Moon phase is another piece of information.

Use it.

Do not worship it.

What the Moon Can Change

Moon phase can influence the timing and strength of tidal movement in many coastal fisheries.

That can influence:

• current
• bait movement
• access
• feeding opportunities
• fish positioning

The useful question is not:

Is a full moon good or bad?

The useful question is:

What does this moon do to the water I am going to fish?

That is a completely different question.

Solunar Tables: I Pay Attention

Solunar tables are one of those subjects that can start an argument at a boat ramp before the boat ever hits the water.

I am not going to tell you they are magic.

I am also not going to tell you I ignore them.

I have spent enough time fishing to believe there are periods when activity appears to increase often enough that the information deserves my attention.

So I look.

• Major period.
• Minor period.
• Moon overhead.
• Moon underfoot.

Then I compare that information with:

• tide
• weather
• bait
• current
• water temperature
• what I am actually seeing

That last part matters most.

A solunar table does not catch fish.

It is one more piece of intelligence.

And on the supposedly worst solunar day of the year?

I will still go fishing.

Bait Can Beat the Calendar

Tarpon go where the groceries are.

Baitfish, shrimp, crabs and other forage respond to tides, rainfall, current, habitat and seasonal movement.

A month labeled “excellent” can disappoint when the food disappears.

A supposedly average week can suddenly become outstanding when bait stacks into the right area.

That is why experienced anglers spend so much time looking at water rather than calendars.

• Are birds working?
• Is bait showering?
• Are mullet moving?
• Are glass minnows stacked along a shoreline?
• Are shrimp moving?
• Are tarpon rolling around concentrated forage?
• The calendar tells you when to start looking.
• The bait tells you what is happening now.

Weather Can Override Almost Everything

You can pick the correct month.

The correct moon.

The correct tide.

The correct destination.

And then the wind blows 30 knots.

Fishing is still fishing.

Wind, storms, rainfall, cloud cover, water clarity and temperature changes can completely alter the way a fishery behaves.

This is another reason we prefer windows rather than supposedly perfect dates.

Shoulder periods can sometimes deliver excellent fishing with:

• fewer anglers
• easier guide availability
• better lodging options
• lower travel friction

Prime season does not guarantee a prime day.

Shoulder season does not guarantee mediocre fishing.

TRAVEL

The fishery should influence the dates.

The dates should not prevent you from taking the trip.

Ask Better Questions

Instead of calling a guide and asking:

“What is the best month?”

Try asking:

What tarpon are normally present during my dates?

What size fish should I realistically expect?

Are they resident or migratory?

What bait is typically present?

What tides generally create the best opportunities?

How does rainfall affect this fishery?

How does wind change where you can fish?

Does moon phase meaningfully change your approach here?

What conditions would make you excited about my dates?

What conditions would concern you?

Now you are having a fishing conversation.

Not reading a calendar.

A Note for Experienced Tarpon Anglers

Some of this may sound rudimentary.

That's okay.

A lot of you have decades on the water.

You already understand tides.

You already watch bait.

You already have opinions about moon phases, solunar periods and migration windows.

But somebody reading this today may be planning his first serious tarpon trip.

The fishing world is constantly adding new people.

They deserve Step One too.

Our job is to cover the fundamentals without stopping there.

The basics build the foundation.

The field observations, destination intelligence and little things learned after thousands of hours around the water are where things start getting interesting.

The Tarpon Dreams Answer

So when is the best time to fish for tarpon?

When the fishery, conditions, fishing style and travel experience line up as well as possible.

But if you are waiting for the moon, tide, calendar, weather forecast and solunar table to all flash green at the same time, you may spend a lot of time sitting at home.

Sometimes the best time to go fishing really is:  When you have time to go fishing.

• Use the science.
• Use the tide table.
• Check the moon.
• Look at the solunar periods.
• Talk to the guide.
• Watch the bait.

Then go.

Because fish do not read calendars.

And every once in a while...

the day that looked mediocre on paper becomes the day you never forget.

The fish may get you there. 

The destination determines whether everybody wants to return.

Safety, Comfort and Personal Tolerance

Adventure means different things to different people.

Some anglers love remote jungle travel, rustic camps and complicated logistics. Others want a comfortable room, dependable transportation and a good restaurant after fishing.

Be realistic. A destination does not become more authentic because you are miserable getting there.

Repeat Visit Value

One of the strongest signals of a great destination is whether you immediately begin thinking about the return trip.

Does the fishery offer different seasons or techniques? Is there more water to explore? Would you bring friends next time? Does the destination work for a short trip as well as a full week?

Repeatability matters because it reveals whether the experience was deeper than a single lucky fishing day.

The TD Destination Test

But the final question is simpler:

Would we recommend this destination to a close friend?

If the answer is not yes, more research is required.

The couple who wants two fishing mornings and four days exploring an island has different needs from the group that wants to fish dawn to dark for six straight days.
